  • "11.Causes of elderly abuse [Chart 22 (a) & (b)]The reasons underlying elder abuse were highly varying over the two areas. Theelders in urban areas accounted property issues (36%), independence of youth(29%) and lack of adjustment due to cultural contrast (22%) as the major reasonsbehind the abuse they are subjected to. It was found that elders complain aboutchanging trends in the country which have affected values and ethics. Children are48 no longer the support of their parents and demand no intervention in theirdecisions. However, the elders in rural areas mainly accounted financial dependence (58%) asthe major reason for their suffering. These elders complain that the modernisationis affecting their living standards. Their children spend more than the required sumof money in buying different modern products. Also, the limited income of old isforcefully taken away by their children. This loss gets reflected in inadequatecaregiving to the eldersthereby make them insecure.12. Reporting [Chart 23 (a) & (b)]The survey viewed that around 65% and 58% elders reported from urban and ruralareas respectively.49 13. Whom Reported? [Chart 24 (a) & (b)]The elders in urban areas equally reported to other family member, friend and localpolice/NGO whereas the elders in rural areas majorly reported their suffering totheir friends (40%). This suggests that elders in rural areas relied largely on theirfriends rather reporting to any other agency.50 14.Why not reported? [Chart 25 (a) & (b)]To maintain the reputation of family, secrecy was maintained in regard to thismenace hugely in both rural (45.6%) and urban (50%) areas. Also, many of theelders in rural area didn?t know what was to be done as compared to elders inurban areas. Threat of complaining was also one of the common reasons in bothareas for not reporting the incident.51 "
